Pinterest statistics for business

Of the 70 million Pinterest users1, 49 million are in the USA and 85% are female2. In fact 42% of adult American women have a Pinterest account.

Retailers recognise the immense buying power which this represents.

Pinterest is a site which enables users to upload and collate photographs and videos linked to other webpages. Users ‘pin’ this content to specific interest collections (known as ‘boards’) on their Pinterest profile.

‘Pinners’ can also elect to assign travel-related pins to a precise location on a world map. Place Pins were designed to combine the beautiful imagery of a travel magazine with the utility of a map online, to inspire travel planning and to share with friends.

There is a self-deprecatory recognition amongst Pinners that Pinterest is so addictive that any attempt to get them away from their screens is a good but possibly futile initiative! Fortunately there is an app for tablets and smartphones, so even away from a power source, the habit can be continued!

More than 80% of Pinterest’s traffic originates from handheld devices.3

However the average time spent on Pinterest per month of 98 minutes, fails to reflect the time commitment of heavy content curators, who may spend many hours per pinning session.

Of all social sites, Pinterest has achieved number #9 ranking.4 It engages 29% of the total digital population.5

The commonality amongst social networks is that they are all highly influential media platforms which connect massive numbers of people and enable instantaneous sharing of content and ideas.

Pinterest has more than 50 billion pins on more than 1 billion boards.5 There are over 2.5 billion page views a month. 14 million items are pinned each day. For manufacturers and retailers, it is a platform enabling direct contact with consumers.6

For Pinterest, this represents 20 terabytes of new data on the network every day.7

On average, images which are taller and do not contain human faces generate more pins.8

Each year, Pinterest serves more than 1.5 trillion recommendations.9

244 million gift-related pins have been pinned to date. But service businesses are equally able to profit from connecting with customers. 100 million food11 related boards and 146 million fashion12 related boards exist on Pinterest.

Businesses are increasingly using Pinterest as a part of an eStrategy to engage with the community, encourage brand advocates and enable sharing of evocative product photography.

27% of active Pinterest users follow a brand on the network.13 42.3% of the top 500 e-commerce sites in North America are exclusively online.14
